Mohawk Place has reopened. What’s it like?
To tell you the truth, it’s not as strange as I was expecting. In the three weekends that we’ve been open, we haven’t had a single person show up at the door without a mask. Our capacity has dropped from 237 down to sixty-one, but it’s rare for local bands to draw more than fifty to sixty. Once touring acts are on the road again, though, it’s going to be tough. Limited capacity will be an issue.
What do you hear from the bands? The patrons?
I’d have to say that half the bands I’ve asked to play lately have declined due to the pandemic. Many are dealing with health issues, or they have family with health issues or compromised immune systems. But other acts are thrilled to be playing out again. Attendance is starting to pick up now that people realize that we’re open. And that we are taking the proper precautions.
Mohawk Place is in a building that dates to 1896. We were able to do routine maintenance and upgrades during the closure.
